Barrow-in-Furness expanded rapidly from a small village of some 300 people to an industrial town of some 80,000 during the latter half of the 19th century, as a direct result ci the introduction of the shipbuilding industry, which remains its principal activity. The maximum use of asbestos was before and during World War II, whilst in the immediate postwar years, a number of captured German ships were stripped out and refitted, resulting in a much heavier exposure to asbestos than is usual in ship construction. Interest was aroused in the later results of this exposure, when, in 1966, the first case of pleural mesothelioma was recognized.
