Occupational and nonoccupational exposures to asbestos hazards are discussed. World production of asbestos increased from 446,000 metric tons in 1938 to over 2 million tons in 1958, indicating the increase in individuals exposed for occupational and nonoccupational reasons to asbestos dust from a variety of sources. Canada is the primary producer of asbestos; United States is the primary consumer. Operations and products which involve asbestos contact for producers, processers, users, consumers, or residents are listed; population groups with occupational and environmental exposure to asbestos are listed. The harmful effects of increasing exposures to asbestos are reflected in a growing number of reported occurrences of asbestosis and asbestos cancer in workers and in the increasing number of countries from which these reports come for the first time. A National Cancer Institute of Canada directed epidemiologic survey of health aspects of asbestos production was undertaken instead by industry itself; the results were highly controversial. The principal worker groups exposed to respiratory contact with asbestos are employed in asbestos mining and milling, in production and use of asbestos cement and plaster, in production and application of asbestos insulation, and in processing asbestos into textiles. Protection of workers against asbestos related health hazards is inadequate in many countries and states.
