This review discussed the classification and characterization of asbestos (1332214) materials, uses of asbestos and sources of exposure, asbestos in history, early recognition of health hazards, and the incidence and prevalence of asbestosis. The pathology of asbestosis, lung fiber burdens and the attribution of disease, asbestos fibers in lung tissue, the pathogenesis of asbestosis, host immunological response, clinical features, radiographic appearances, and diagnostic techniques were considered. The influence of smoking on nonmalignant asbestos related disease, disease progression and prognosis, benign asbestos pleural disease, hyaline plaques of the parietal pleura, radiographic appearances of plaques, clinical features, benign pleural effusion, diffuse pleural thickening, asbestos related malignant disease, diffuse malignant mesothelioma of pleura and peritoneum, the latent period, mesothelioma unrelated to asbestos exposure, lung fiber burden, asbestosis and mesothelioma, diagnostic microscopy, and clinical features were discussed. Other topics included lung cancer, cigarette smoking and asbestos related lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, lymphoproliferative disorders, tremolite (77536686) exposure, chrysotile (12001295) exposure, and animal investigations.
