Abstract
This report reviews the available data on the adverse health effects of asbestos, concentrating on hazards likely to be met at work. Well established facts such as the occurrence of asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and other conditions, are reviewed. Three controversial aspects are dealt with in detail: other types of cancer that can be produced by the inhalation of asbestos fibres; difficulties involved in assessing quantitative effects of asbestos; dose-response relationships. A final chapter looks at the effects anticipated with current control limits. In appendix: statistics of mesotheliomas by sex, fibre type and site in cohort studies of asbestos-exposed workers.
