HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. A man was irregularly exposed to asbestos dust over a 2-mo. period. Six yr later symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis appeared. Chest roentgenograms then revealed pleural plaques and pulmonary nodules of Caplan type, but no diffuse fibrosis. Microscopy of resected pulmonary tissue showed fibrosis with asbestos bodies and typical foci of rheumatoid pneumoconiosis. Pleural asbestosis without roentgenologically demonstrable pulmonary fibrosis probably is more common than is generally recognized. It may result from brief, accidental exposure to asbestos, sometimes in unexpected connections. Knowledge of the roentgenologic features of pleural asbestosis and of the |minor use| of asbestos should-among other things-increase the likelihood of detecting Caplan's syndrome.
