A case is reported of a 58 year-old man who died of complete heart block after suffering from hypertensive cardiac disease for five years and cardiac hypertrophy with congestive failure for five months. After necropsy studies showed evidence of possible exposure to asbestos (1332214) it was learned that the patient had drilled asbestos bearing rock for 2 years in an asbestos mine in South America 17 years previous to his death. Gross pathology, X-ray and electrocardiographic results are given. There were interlobar adhesions of the left lung, and the anterior surface of the lower lobe was covered with fibrous adhesions. Apical scarring was noted. Liver pathology is described. Microscopic examination showed numerous phagocytic cells that contained quantities of blood pigment in the alveoli of the lungs. Several microphotographs of asbestos particles and fibers in tissue are given. The extreme dilatation of the right side of the heart is considered attributable to fibrosis of the lungs.
