Abstract
Accounts of cases of pleural hyalo-serositis (pleural thickening) in humans were reported. Parietal pleural plaques were detected by chest radiograph in 100 people living near asbestos (1332214) mines in Finland, and in 300 of more than 60,000 patients examined in a radius 380 miles. The regional distribution of the cases was found to be random. The author concludes that the pleural lesions may be due to a previously unrecognized inflammatory disease, and that asbestos must be considered the main causative factor until some alternative causative agent is demonstrated.
