The impact of asbestosis on the incidence of bronchial cancer is reviewed. A historical account of the relationship between asbestosis and bronchial cancer in humans is outlined. From 1961 to 1963, 54.5 percent of 77 subjects exposed to asbestosis (1332214) developed cancer. A survey of 2,044 autopsied cases revealed that 34.3 percent had intrathoracic malignancies, including mesotheliomas. In two other series of autopsy cases on asbestos workers with lung cancer, asbestosis was invariably present. The evidence for the association between asbestosis and bronchial cancer is summarized. The anatomic sites of bronchial cancer in asbestos workers are outlined. A greater prevalence of adenocarcinomas than expected among asbestosis related cancers is noted. The proportion of adenocarcinoma varies depending on the source of the histologic material. Rats exposed to asbestos develop mostly peripheral adenoma, adenomatosis, adenocarcinoma, and squamous carcinoma. The author concludes that there is an excess of adenocarcinoma among asbestos workers.
