Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP A color reaction for the identification of the acetate and acetyl radicals in drugs using lanthanum nitrate, iodine and ammonia solution is presented and the possibilities of interference and error when using the test are discussed. The reaction needs a pH of 9 to 11 which is not attained in the cases of the anhydrous acetic acid and acetic acid reagents of the European Pharmacopeia I. As the reaction is also valid for the propionate radical, it is suggested that the monograph for acetate and acetyl in the European and German Pharmacopeias be extended to include propionyl.
