IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP A new derivative of pentosan polysulfate, bego-0391, was prepared and studied with respect to its anticoagulant and fibrinolytic effects as well as its oral absorption behavior in rats. Intravenous and oral results of bego-0391 were compared with pentosan polysulfate sodium (SP-54). Oral administration of bego-0391 resulted in an absorption of 10 to 20%, whereas the absorption of pentosan polysulfate sodium amounted to only about 1%. The findings reveal that both drugs exhibit equal anticoagulant and fibrinolytic effects but bego-0391 is much better absorbed following oral administration.
