The influence of Cu2+ and Cd2+ in the concentration of 100 mu M (applied for 1, 3, or 24 h) on the content and metabolism of lipids and proteins in the membranes of chloroplasts, mitochondria and microsomes of the water plant Hydrilla verticillata (L. fil.) Royle was investigated. It was demonstrated that the presence of metal ions in the incubation medium causes a remarkable decrease in the content of the total phospholipids (mostly in the membranes of chloroplasts and mitochondria) and in particular, of phosphatidylcholine (PtdCho) and phosphatidylethanolamine (Ptd Etn). Evaluation of the [C-14-CH3] methionine uptake during the PtdCho synthesis revealed that, along with the destruction of lipids under the influence of Cu2+ and Cd2+, an intense renewal of the lipids occurs due to activation of an alternative pathway of biosynthesis, namely, of trans-methylation. Uptake of [C-14-CH3]methionine also increased in membrane proteins. The results are discussed in relation with regulation mechanisms of lipid metabolism under the conditions of an increased content of phosphatidic acid (PA) and an increased speed of the lipid and protein exchange.
