A new flame-retardant dope additive, dithiopyrophosphate, has been prepared by reacting neopentyl glycol with thiophosphoryl chloride in a media of benzene-pyridine and hydrolysing the intermediate product so rormed in 1,4-dioxan. This compound has been found td be stable against acid and base and improves the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of viscose rayon fibres from 19 to 27% when used as a flame-retardant dope additive. The physical properties of rayon fibres, except the limiting oxygen index, do not change after imparting name retardancy.
