Air-dried, milled roots of Piper officinrum (500gm) were extracted repeatedly with dichloromethane. After removal of solvent in vacuo, the CH(2)Cl(2)-solvent residue was fractionated by using hexane and ethyl acetate solvents. After fractionation, all fractions are submitted for NMR spectroscopy. Out of all fractions interesting fractions are subjected to column chromatography, so that three pure compounds as piplartine, piperine and sesamin were isolated. All are known compounds as they are characterized by using reference data. Piplartine and piperine are alkaloids and sesamin is a lignin compound. Structures of the isolated compounds have been assigned on the basis of their analytical data. By surveying the literature compound sesamin is a lignin first to be isolated from piper family.
