The habitats of the natural populations of H. serrata in Zhejiang, China, and adjacent areas were studied. The water and organic matter contents, conductivity and pH of soil; K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Na, Al, Pb and Cd contents of plant and soil; and huperzine A content of plants were evaluated. The results showed that H. serrata mostly grew under closed forests or in ravine with wet soils at an altitude of 350-1700 m, and with more than 1500 mm annual rainfall, 78% relative humidity, 10-30% soil water content, 4.57-5.31 soil pH, 0.061-0.385 ms/cm soil conductance, and 6.18-9.75% organic matter. H. serrata absorbed high amounts of K, Ca, Zn, Na and other elements. Pb, Cu and Cd accumulation was also high. Shady habitats with sufficient rainfall, high relative humidity, and soils with lower conductance and 4.75-5.31 pH were favourable for the cultivation of H. serrata. The scatter plot developed using detrended correspondence analysis based on soil analysis showed that the environmental variables for the Pan'an population were distinct from the other sites, revealing that environmental conditions have some effects on huperzine A content of H. serrata.
