Results of studies linking exposure to asbestos particles with cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and mesotheliomas are reviewed. Subsequent hazards to the population of Duluth, Minnesota, where high concentrations of asbestiform amphibole fiber are found in the tap water are discussed, and the statistical risks to the residents are estimated. Extensive studies by the EPA and its National Research Center have found that nearly all of the asbestos in the tap water can be removed by flocculation followed by granular media or diatomaceous earth filtration. The costs of this type of treatment are estimated at $5,000,000 and the time required for its implementation is estimated at 2 years. Data on morbidity and mortality rates in the Duluth area and among asbestos workers are compared.
