The effectiveness of glove bag containment techniques during asbestos (1332214) removal activities was studied. Breathing zone and area samples were collected during the removal of pipe lagging from four schools in which glove bags were used as a control technique. The average asbestos concentration found during removal activities was 0.35 fibers/cubic centimeter (f/cm3). It was estimated that 70% of the workers had exposures that exceeded the NIOSH recommended limit and 56% exceeded the OSHA permissible exposure limit. Over 70% of the short term breathing zone samples had fiber concentrations greater than 0.2f/cm3. Comparison of sampling and analytical techniques demonstrated that aggressive sampling followed by analysis with transmission electron microscopy was the most sensitive method to measure contamination. A higher level of contamination was seen after removal compared with before removal in five of eight rooms studied. The authors recommend that a back up containment system be used in addition to glove bag containment during asbestos removal activities.
