Abstract
The NIOSH A-reader and B-reader certification program, and the International Labour Office (ILO) classification system for chest X-ray films were discussed in this letter to the editor. The Department of Health and Human Services mandated that both the ILO opacity classification system and NIOSH A-readers and B-readers be used in its surveillance program for coal miners. OSHA also mandated that chest X-ray films of asbestos (1332214) exposed workers be interpreted by ILO readers. OSHA does not require that these films be read by certified B-readers.
