The use of negative pressure glove bags for asbestos (1332214) maintenance and abatement projects was discussed. Negative pressure glove bags were enclosures in which the internal pressure was maintained below ambient pressure. Negative pressure glove bags were used in seven abatement projects during which 1,800 feet of asbestos pipe lagging were removed. These projects expended 6,100 man hours of work including bag installation, asbestos removal, clearance sampling, and bag removal. A total of 312 personal air samples were analyzed for asbestos during the projects using the OSHA phase contrast microscopy method. The average nonweighted asbestos concentration in these samples was 0.0207 fiber per cubic centimeter (f/cc). When expressed on an 8 hour time weighted average exposure basis, this represented an average exposure of 0.0072f/cc. The author concludes that negative pressure glove bags have been shown to be effective for asbestos maintenance and large scale asbestos abatement projects.
