Abstract
Pest problem is one of the major constraints for achieving higher production in agriculture crops. India loses about 30% of its crops due to pests and diseases each year. It is estimated that India loses approximately 18% of the crop yield valued at Rs. 90,000-crore due to pest attacks each year only. The use of pesticides in crop protection has certainly contributed for minimizing yield losses. The great increase in the use of pesticides occurred with the development of new organic chemicals. In addition to chemicals for the control of fungi and insects, new developments were nematicides, herbicides, rodenticides, etc. The use of chemicals helped increase productivity, but caused great concern about their effect on human health and safety. Most of the pesticides are obviously organic compounds which behave as good chelating agents towards the metals. It has been seen that the pesticidal activity is enhanced on complexation with the metals. In view of this, many coordination compounds have been designed recently for their specific biocidal action. The biological effect of these derivatives depends on the nature and structure of the ligands and their metal complexes and also. on the presence of particular element. Applicability of coordination compounds in the field of bioinorganic chemistry is quite vast. These compounds constitute the minerals, plants and are also present in animals. These play important functions and are of great importance in regulating the various biological functions of plants and animals. Keeping these facts into consideration an attempt has been made to screen some coordination compounds of boron, silicon, tin, manganese and molybdenum for their pesticidal activity. The results showed that with some precautions coordination compounds may act as good pesticides. The findings have been discussed in details.
