Research has been conducted for many years on the ignition of solid propellants, concerning both ignition of the propellant as such and ignition propagation and pressure buildup in the grain inside the propulsion system. A synopsis of the results obtained on various propellant ignition mechanisms using a variety of test equipment is given herein. Coherent results and correlations including propellant decomposition characteristics were obtained for propellants with an ammonium perchlorate base, double base propellants, HMX and various propellants with a nitrate binder and HMX.
