The volatile substances of Houttuynia cordata Thunb., a traditional Chinese medicine and the effective components for the injection of houttuynia cordata Thunb., have been studied. The chemical composition of the volatile substances and the effective components for the injection were identified by gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry, and 48 compounds have been identified from both the volatile substances and the effective components for the injection. Both the volatile substances and the effective components for the injection were nearly the same with chemical composition. The, major constituents were 2-undecanone, decanoyl acetaldehyde (houttuynium), benzaldehyde, methol, bornyl acetate, 2-undecenal, 1-undecanol, decanoic acid, delta-selinene, mynsticin, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, diphenylamine, hexadecanoic acid.. The dominant compound was 2-undecanone, which was 9.8% in the volatile substances and 9.2% in the effective components for the injection respectively. Decanoyl acetaldehyde (houttuynium), as the special substance in houttuynia cordata thunb., was 5.1% in the volatile substances and 2.6% in the effective components for the injection respectively. The structure identification of 2-undecanone and decanoyl acetaldehyde has been discussed as well.
