is a chapter of 2919080 Histopathology of preclinical toxicity studies: Interpretation and relevance in drug safety evaluation
The purpose of this chapter is to describe the pathologic alterations that can occur spontaneously and be induced by drug in the female reproductive tract of laboratory animals and their implication for patients. It describes comparative anatomy and hormonal control mechanisms that influence the histologic appearances of the vagina, uterus, ovaries and oviduct of laboratory species and discusses how these differ from humans.

Drug-induced alterations described include changes to the vaginal mucosa as a result of topically administered agents as well as the effects of therapies that alter sex hormone status. It describes cyclic alterations to the endometrium, myometrium and ovaries and how these may be modified by treatment with therapeutic agents.

There is also discussion of the drug-induced inflammation, atrophy and proliferative disorders that can be induced in the female reproductive tract as well as neoplasms that can occur, notably glandular and mesenchymal tumors of the uterus and sex cord and mesenchymal tumors in the ovary and oviducts.
