Abstract
The market for 1,3-propanediol (PDO) is currently over 100 million pounds per year and is growing rapidly. PDO is a component of industrial polyesters such as Dupont's Sorona (R) and CDP Natureworks (R) or Shell Chemical's Corterra (TM). Markets for the polyester include thermoplastics, textiles, carpets, and upholstery. This paper reviews the methods for the production of 1,3-propanediol by focusing on four feedstocks: glycerol, ethylene oxide, acrolein, and glucose.
