Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The compatibility and stability of aminophylline in dextrose 5% injection with hydrocortisone sodium succinate or dexamethasone sodium phosphate were studied. The following additives were mixed with 400 ml of dextrose 5% injection: (1) aminophylline injection (250 mg) and hydrocortisone sodium succinate injection containing an equivalent of 100 mg of hydrocortisone; and (2) aminophylline injection (250 mg) and dexamethasone sodium phosphate injection (12 mg). The aminophylline-dexamethasone sodium phosphate admixture in dextrose 5% injection was found to be compatible and stable for a period of 24 hr. However, rapid hydrolysis of hydrocortisone sodium succinate to its parent hydrocortisone was observed when it was mixed with aminophylline in dextrose 5% injection. Since the total hydrocortisone content did not change appreciably and there was no visible cloudiness, the admixture could be considered as compatible for the period tested.
