This research work applies a clean technology to treat the concentrated wastewater of used HNO3 issued from brass pickling in a large industrial plant. According to the literature this topic was rarely studied. In this study a hybrid process is applied to separate the mixture of nitric acid and dissolved metals (Cu++, Zn++ and Pb++). In order to do that diffusion dialysis is conducted first to separate, purify and recycle the HNO3 excess, then selective precipitation of Pb++ as Pb-3(PO4)(2) is carried out at low pH, next, cementation of Cu by Zn from the mixture Cu++/ Zn++ is conducted, and finally, the remaining is a pure solution of Zn(NO3)(2). The new provisional calculation tools and software, important part of this work, have facilitated these processes. Excellent laboratory scale results have been obtained. They represent an efficient alternative to the destructive process based on HNO3 neutralisation and metallic hydroxides sludge precipitation which has serious drawbacks such as loss of the expensive acid, pollution by nitrates, consumption of alkalis and production of a problematic sludge (filtration, storage, fate).
