Abstract
Polystyrene (PS) belongs to the group of standard thermoplastics that also includes polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(vinyl chloride). Because of its special properties, polystyrene can be used in an extremely wide range of applications. The annual consumption worldwide in 2004 was ca. 11.5 × 106 t; thus polystyrene is one of the most quantitatively important chemicals.
