A TLV-TWA of 0.1 mg/m3 is recommended for occupational exposure to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) to minimize the potential for skin irritation, dermatitis, liver toxicity, and hematologic alterations that can include methemoglobinemia, reduced red blood cell and hemoglobin values, and aplastic anemia. It also should provide a significant margin of protection against development of cataracts. Percutaneous absorption of sufficient quantities of TNT to induce systemic toxicity, including possible development of cataracts, is reported for exposed workers; accordingly, a Skin notation is assigned to TNT. Sufficient data were not available to recommend SEN or carcinogenicity notations or a TLV-STEL.
TNT is a substance for which Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs) have been recommended; (see current BEI Documentation for Methemoglobin Inducers). However, because methemoglobinemia is not the health effect driving the TLV, use of this BEI is recommended only as a means of confirming exposures, especially via the skin.
