Abstract
2,4-Dinitroimidazole (2;4-DNI) (15) is readily prepared from the nitration of 2-nitroimidazole. 2,4-DNI exhibits moderate performance and is regarded as a shock insensitive expldsive. The relatively low cost and facile synthesis makes 2,4-DNI a realistic alternative to TNT for mass use in ordnance. This article relates to nitrating imidazole to form 4-nitroimidazole by means of nitric and sulfuric acid and then nitrating 4-nitroimidazole by means of nitric acid, acetic acid and acetic anhydride to form 1,4-dinitroimidazole(1,4-DNI) and finally converting 1,4-DNI to 2,4-DNI by thermal rearrangement. The obtained materials were characterized by 1H-NMR spectrometry. Thermo gravimetric and DSC curves were also recorded. All data agree with the proposed structures.
