In many parts of India the groundwater is highly saline. Irrigation management needs to take into account salinity, as well as the monsoon climate, to avoid leaching that would increase salt loads, particularly at critical stages of crop growth. Agro-management strategies to achieve these objectives are reviewed. Sprinkler and drip irrigation help control salinity but are not technically or economically feasible on a large scale. Management also should encourage utilization of carried over rainwater in the soil profile and shallow water tables. Crop tolerance limits to saline water in different parts of India have been determined. Irrigation with non-saline water during early crop growth, and cycling of saline and non-saline during the pre-sowing period, dosing with phosphorus to alleviate the effects of chloride toxicity, use of organic materials to enhance the efficiency of applied nitrogen, use of gypsum, and various cultural practices are other recommended management strategies.
