A computer-assisted pH metric investigation has been made on the speciation of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes of L-dopa and 1, 10-phenanthroline in solutions containing different ratios of metal to primary(Dopa) and secondary(Phen) ligands, (M:L:X = 1:2.5:2.5; 1:2.5:5.0; 1:5.0:2.5). The titrations are carried out with sodium hydroxide in varying concentrations (0-60% v/v) of dioxan water mixtures at an ionic strength of 0.16 mol dm(-3) and 303 K. Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) form the ternary complexes of MLXH, MLX2H and ML2XH2 in dioxan-water mixtures. The variation of stability constants with dielectric constant is explained on the basis of electrostatic and non-electrostatic forces.
