BIOSIS COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. The spatial distribution of 25 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, C, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, N, Ni, P, Pb, S, Si, Sn, Ti, V, and Zn) was investigated in sediments of the oligotrophic Lake Stechlin on the basis of 51 sampling points. The temporal variations of this elements (except of As, B, Ba, Hg, Mo, Sn and V) were investigated in a sediment core that was taken at 68 m water depth and segmented in 4-cm-intervals. The cooling water circuit of a nuclear power plant was found to be a local source for some metals, particularly Cd, Zn, and Cu. Due to the water circulation through the lake, the central and the western part of the southern basins were influenced by the power plant. Other elements like Mo, Mn, Fe or P accumulate in the deepest region of the lake. The concentrations of various elements, i.e. Ca, Cu and Cd increase in the upper 20 cm of sediment. The factors of accumulation between 0-20 cm and 40-48 cm sediment depth range from 5 to 8.
