Abstract
This article reports progress in developing a new class of support materials based on silicon carbide (SiC). Silicon carbide offers superior mechanical and thermal properties, which coupled to chemical inertness, avoid several of the problems inherent in the use of commercial supports, mainly based on oxides, alumina or activated charcoal. Medium or high surface area SiC can now be easily prepared in various shapes, by preshaping a carbon precursor ("shape memory synthesis"), from the macroscopic (monolith, sphere, extrudate, grains...) to the nanoscopic scale (SiC nanotube). High performances obtained with SiC supported catalysts are described for some applications such as automotive exhaust-pipe reactions, selective isomerization of paraffinic hydrocarbons and H2S removal by direct oxidation into elemental sulfur.
