A review is made of the properties, industrial uses and toxicology of benzene (71432), toluene (108883), xylene (95476) (108383) (106423), ethyl-benzene (100414), cumene (98828), cyclohexane (110827), methyl-cyclohexane, terralin, decalin, and turpentine (8006642). Chronic poisoning by benzene attacks primarily and with great severity the hemopoietic system, producing the classical picture of aplastic anaemia. Acute poisoning affects the central nervous system, at first convulsively neurotoxic and later asphyxiatingly narcotic. Xylene is relatively innocuous to the hemopoietic system, especially with regard to the causation of aplastic anemia.
