HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Crystalline deposits of magnesium ammonium phosphate coated the digested sludge lines at an activated sludge plant equipped for phosphate removal. Analysis of the anaerobic digestion system showed that phosphate removed during secondary treatment was supersaturating the digester contents. Subsequent deposition in the pipelines was caused by pH increases, vibration and high surface volume ratios. The problem was eliminated by reducing the incoming phosphates, diluting the digested sludge and using pipe with smooth walls.
