Abstract
HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Biological denitrification can initiate precipitation of calcium phosphate inside biofilms. This is a consequence of the high pH values which may be created by a combination of the production of alkalinity and the diffusional resistance to outtransport of alkalinity. The pH increase is verified by pH measurements at the rear of the biofilm. As predicted theoretically, a low alkalinity is needed to obtain a high pH in the biofilm.
