IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Avicel (microcrystalline cellulose), Emcompress (calcium phosphate dibasic dihydrate) and Sta-Rx-1500 (starch) were used as excipients in sodium acetylsalicylate (I) tablets, and their effects on I hydrolysis at elevated temperatures and low humidity were studied. Initial rates and rate constants calculated from the contracting sphere and nucleation models showed that hydrolysis was fastest with starch, followed by calcium phosphate dibasic and then microcrystalline cellulose. The possible effects of porosity and of water content of the excipients were considered.
