Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP To investigate a drug delivery device prepared from tetracalcium phosphate (calcium oxide phosphate) and calcium phosphate dibasic dihydrate (calcium phosphate dihydrate), the cement device was prepared and loaded with 5% mercaptopurine (6-mercaptopurine) either by incorporation into the cement powder or the drug was prepared as a pellet and hardened into the cement, which varied in thickness between 1 and 3 mm, and some heterogeneous systems were coated with different polymers; the systems were evaluated in vitro for dissolution and solubility. Release from the homogenous cements did not obey the Higuchi equation. The release rate from the heterogeneous system was a function of cement thickness, indicating that release kinetics could be controlled by the design of the cement formulation.
