Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP This study is to assess the effectiveness of cysteine in increasing the precipitation level of calcium/phosphate in parenteral nutrition solutions. Parenteral nutrition is an essential portion of therapy in patients having inadequate oral caloric and protein intake. Many patients require calcium and phosphorus intake that may exceed the accepted safe formulation levels and may be unable to tolerate the extra fluid required to supply the needed calcium and phosphorus. The addition of L-cysteine hydrochloride to parenteral nutrition solutions formulated with Travasol may serve to increase the level at which calcium and phosphate that may be admixed in a solution without risking the formation of precipitant. This would aid in providing the necessary nutrition to critically ill patients. We were able to demonstrate that the addition of cysteine to parenteral nutrition solutions formulated with Travasol does increase the precipitation level for calcium/phosphate to allow more concentrated solutions for fluid restricted and other critically ill patients.
