Abstract
The metabolism of 3,4-benzpyrene (50328) (BP) in rabbits and rats was investigated. Each of 70 rabbits used in the study received a single intraperitoneal injection of 5 milliliters of a saturated solution of BP. Rats received similar injections. Feces were collected during the subsequent 3 weeks. Analysis was done by chromatography and fluorescence. Feces was found to contain 8-benzpyrenol (13345261), 10-hydroxybenzo(a)pyrene (56892310), 5,8-benzpyrenequinone (3067149) and 5,10-benzpyrenequinone (3067138). The same products were found in rat feces although the relative amounts of 10-benzpyrenol and 5,10-benzpyrenequinone were lower in rats than in rabbits. Evidence of other fluorescent products was also obtained. The authors suggest that these products are derived from BP. However, their nature has not yet been determined.
