HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Published methods for analysis of benzo(a)pyrene in (cigarette) smoke condensates involve a lengthy sample preparation followed by spectrophotometric estimation of the content of the carcinogen. A more efficient method was developed in which the benzo(a)pyrene is extracted from the smoke condensate, washed with acid and alkali solutions, eluted from a Florisil column, isolated by preparative thin layer chromatography and quantitized on a liquid-liquid chromatograph at 254 mmu. The range of recovery is 60-88%.
