Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is an important polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon monitored in numerous matrices, including environmental samples, natural products and food, as well as cigarette smoke. It is one of the many PAHs present in various fuel oils and is monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency as a priority pollutant. Challenges to the quantitative analysis of benzo[a]pyrene include the need to enrich trace levels and to overcome the effects of matrix interferences. A simplified sample preparation technique coupled with a solid phase clean up reduces interferences with benzo[a]pyrene in a tobacco matrix without compromising the analyte recovery. This selective extraction and clean up decreases instrument run and cycle times allowing for a higher sample throughput. Although only one PAH was evaluated with this method, this procedure could be adapted to encompass most of the PAHs of interest in fuel oils and other matrices.
