Grignard addition to polysubstituted phthalic anhydride 3 yielded the corresponding hydroxyisobenzofuranones 4, which were reduced by lithium triethylborohydride (Super-Hydride) to afford the novel polysubstituted isobenzofuranones 5 in high yield.
