The use of natural products as nutritional suplements or drugs requires to know with accuracy the content of some toxic metals as Cd, Pb, As and Hg. The D-003 is a root material extracted from the sugar cane and composed by high molecular weight alifatic acids with antioxidant properties. In this work the concentration of As, Cd, Pb and Hg in D-003 by flame atomic absoption spectrometry was determined, employing a digestion procedure with nitric, sulfuric and percloric acids. The hydride generation technique was used to determine As and cold vapour method for the determination of Hg. The accuracy of the determination was evaluated by the standard additions method and the recovery was satisfactory between 95 and 105%. The detection limits were 0.002, 0.02, 0.30 y 0.01 ppm for As, Cd, Pb y Hg, respectively. The contents of As, Cd, Pb and Hg were under the limits of detection as well as the established limit of the 27 United States Pharmacopeia for similar products.
