Abstract
A static non-renewable acute toxicity bioassay was undertaken to determine LC50 of endosulfan (99%; alpha: beta ratio of 7:3) in Labeo rohita fingerlings and its effect on enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism (LDH), pentose phosphatase pathway (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-G6PDH), gluconeogenesis (ALT and AST), general energetics (ATPase), oxidative protection (catalase, superoxide dismutase-SOD) and neurotransmission (acetylcholine esterase-AChE). The 96 hr LC50 value was 1.91 ppb. Activities of enzymes were significantly (P < 0.051 or < 0.01) affected in tissue and function specific manner, and mostly effects were dose dependent. The induction of LDH in muscle and ATPase in muscle and liver was noticed. The G6PDH in muscle, liver, kidney; AST and ALT in gill; ALT in liver and catalase in muscle were inhibited. Catalase and SOD was induced in liver. Decrease in acetyl choline esterase in brain and muscle was reflected in the altered behaviour of fish during acute toxicity.
