IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effects of excipients, such as chalk, sodium stearate, stearic acid, and starch on the release of thiabendazole (I) from compressed microcapsules, was investigated. Results showed that higher compression pressures in the preparation of the tablets produced a slower initial release rate, but after 45 min approximately 90% of I was released at all the pressures studied. The addition of stearic acid to the microcapsules before compression increased disintegration time and produced a slower dissolution rate for I. A slower release rate was obtained with the addition of sodium stearate. The addition of starch caused the complete breakdown of the microcapsules within 20 min. The I dissolution rates showed little variation with starch concentration. The inclusion of chalk in the tablet formulations caused very little change in either the disintegration time of the compressed microcapsules or the dissolution of I.
