The now-vacuum pyrolyses of 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5-one (5); 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5-one (6) and 5,7-dihydro-6H-dibenzo[a,c]cycloheptena-6-one (7) were examined at 1.033 mbar and different temperatures between 850 degrees C and 1050 degrees C. The formation and the time dependence of reaction products (phenanthrene from 5; anthracene, phenanthrene, fluorene, dihydrophenanthrene from 6; phenanthrene, dihydrophenanthrene and fluorene from 7) as function of temperature are discussed. The suggested reaction mechanisms am compared with related literature data.
