PESTAB Alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-BHC) reduces total non-protein thiol in the liver of the rat through a reduction in glutathione (GSH) content. Brain and kidney non-protein thiol is net affected. Maximum reduction was by about 50% 18 hr after 400 mg/kg, the highest dose tested. At this time, the decrease in liver non-protein thiol was linearly related to dose and to alpha-BHC concentration in liver as a whole and in the liver cytosol fraction. The effect is thought to be causally related to GSH-dependent degradation of alpha-BHC in the liver, previously shown to take place in vitro. (Author abstract by permission)
