Abstract
The nature of the terminal residues of a large group of pesticides is reviewed. Included are organochlorine and organophosphorus compounds, carbamates, fumigants, fungicides, herbicides, and chlordimeform (6164983). The identification of five previously unreported metabolites of lindane (58899) is noted. No evidence exists for the metabolism of hexachlorobenzene (118741) by plants, animals, or soil microbes or of its degradation into another product in the environment. Current information is presented on the metabolites and breakdown products of cyclodiene insecticides, primarily Aldrin (309002) and Dieldrin (60571). New studies of chlorobenzilate (510156) show no residues in wine or milk. The stability and persistence of fenitrothion (122145) is cited in the review of organophosphorus compound residues. The possibility that the chemistry of diazinon (333415) can vary by manufacturer is noted. Residues of monocrotophos (6923224) require no further study, and studies are under way on methidathion (950378). New terminal residues for carbaryl (63252) suggested by cell culture and insect studies remain to be confirmed. The method of analysis is crucial to avoid artifacts in the study of fumigants, such as phosphine (7803512), methyl-bromide (74839), ethylene-dibromide (106934), carbon-tetrachloride (56235), and ethylene-oxide (75218). The occurrence of a degradation product of the ethylene-bisdithiocarbamate fungicides is reported. The controversy surrounding the use of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (41903575) is noted.
