Abstract
A method to determine 1-naphthol (90153) content in 2-naphthol (135193) was developed using gas chromatography. Gas chromatographic separations were proposed for control of purity. The use of fractometer testing of isomeric phenols for small quantities of 1-naphthol in 2-naphthol was not suitable because of the low load capacity of the column. Various stationary liquid phases on carrier substances with coatings were tested. Only polyester columns delivered the required separation capability and symmetrical peaks. 1-Naphthol had a lower retention time than 2-naphthol. To make the determination, an internal standard was used: phthalic-acid diesters of n-butanol and isomeric pentanols with retention times of 0.55 to 0.82 percent. Evaluation was accomplished using the peak height method, measuring curves within a ratio of 10 to 1. Prior to use of comparison substances, the naphthols were purified by zone refining. Testing conditions permitted the determination of 1-naphthol content in 2-naphthol between 1.0 and 0.1 mass percent. When the amount of the internal standards was reduced, the determinations could be made up to 0.01 mass percent. (German)
