Abstract
Aquifer material and groundwater were collected from the saturated zone of a cometabolic air sparging demonstration site, and microcosms were constructed to assess the aerobic cometabolic transformation of trichloroethylene and cis-dichloroethylene using propane as an added substrate. Microcosm performance was monitored using headspace analysis of propane, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, and DO. Results showed that the indigenous microorganisms at the site had the ability to utilize propane and transform both trichloroethylene and cis-dichloroethylene, with the latter transformed more rapidly than the former. In the presence of propane, nitrogen limitation occurred quickly, but ammonia addition successfully overcame the limitation, increasing propane utilization and chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon transformation. The amount of N required for propane utilization was significantly higher in the microcosms contaminated with chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons compared to those containing only propane.
